THE BIRTH OF JÖRG DEMUS MEMORIAL HALL

The first encounter with Maestro Jörg Demus was by chance about 20 years ago.
Our chorus group sang ‘Requiem’ by Giuseppe Verdi to commemorate the centennial of his death in 2001. This was the first performance in Okinawa under the direction of Conductor S. Tsutsumi. The following year he took Maestro Demus to Okinawa for the first performance of ‘Choral Fantasy’ composed by Beethoven. Mr. Tsutsumi conducted the Metropolitan Orchestra and the pianist was Maestro Demus. ‘Choral Fantasy′ is said to be the original of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, and it is, of course, very hard to perform. Maestro’s outstanding piano must have drawn out our talents, and aided us to give a polished performance.
Maestro seemed to like Okinawa, our chorus group, and Izumi Hospital, so he paid a visit every year after the concert. While he stayed in Okinawa he played Bach, Schubert, and Beethoven for the patients of the psychiatric ward. He also gave lectures to us about the music of Vienna, and directed our chorus group, including my singing of Schubert songs. He loved the sea of Okinawa and always stayed at the hotel by the seashore.
Since I heard that Maestro Demus was in trouble after Mrs.Haruko Ikeda of ’Salone Cristofori’ had passed away, I have tried to continue the musical activity of the Salone with the support and advice of my friends. I then happened to be appointed as a professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture, so I am very happy to continue it as Salone Fontana, a research center of Izumi Hospital, to practice the art, garden and musical treatments.
The sounds of Maestro’s piano from his 90th birthday memorial concert at Kioi Hall in 2018 still remains in my ears. I wish I could nurture his superb music in Okinawa and all over Japan. Though it has been, and will continue to be, very difficult to run and to maintain, I would like to keep ‘Salone Fontana – Jörg Demus Memorial Hall ′in Tokyo where people can feel it as the treasure box of Maestro’s soul.
This hall was founded by Mrs. Haruko Ikeda as Salone Cristofori, and I am most grateful to her, as well as all the people who have supported it, in order to build the foundation of Maestro’s music. Maestro Demus and his music is still alive in our hearts.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Maestro Demus and all the people I have met through our love of music.

イェルク・デームス メモリアルホールの誕生

イェルク・デームス先生との出会いは突然に始まり、その後二十年近く、毎年のように沖縄に来ていただく幸せな日々でありました。
２００１年のジュゼッペ・ヴェルディ没後百年記念の「レクイエム」沖縄初演の合唱を私どもの合唱団が担当し、堤俊作先生に指導をしていただいたことから翌年に堤先生がデームス先生を沖縄にお連れして、ベートーヴェンのあの「合唱幻想曲」をデームス先生のピアノと私どもの合唱、堤先生の指揮するメトロポリタンオーケストラの組み合わせで沖縄初演としました。ベートーヴェンの「第九交響曲」の母体ともいわれる「合唱幻想曲」は極めて難しい曲でありましたが、デームス先生のピアノに引きだされるように私たちは歌い切りました。その後もデームス先生は沖縄と私たちの合唱団、そしていずみ病院を気に入っていただき、毎年のように沖縄に来ていただきました。
精神科の入院患者さんの前で、バッハからシューベルト、ベートーヴェンと本物の音楽を弾いて下さり、さらにウィーン音楽の講義と演奏、そして私たちの合唱への指導から私のシューベルトの歌までも指導していただきました。デームス先生は沖縄では毎回、海のそばのホテルに宿泊され沖縄の海をとても愛されていました。
多くの沖縄での出会いがありましたが、今思えばもっと多くの人との出会いがあればと悔やまれます。私どもにとってはまことに幸運かつ充実した日々でありました。
「サローネ・クリストフォリ」の池田明子さんが亡くなり、デームス先生が困っておられることを聞かされ、私なりに在京の芸術家や知人と相談を重ね、ついに、いずみ病院の研究所として引き継げるようになり、私も東京農業大学の教授となって、芸術療法、園芸療法、音楽療法の研究所「サローネ・フォンタナ」として整備致しました。
「サローネ・フォンタナ」の経営・維持は困難続きではありますが、何とか今日まできました。
２０１９年秋の紀尾井ホールでの九十歳記念コンサートのピアノの音が残ったまま、これからもデームス音楽を沖縄でも育てて、東京の「サローネ・フォンタナ イェルク・デームスメモリアルホール」として、「サローネ・フォンタナ」のオーナーとしては、経営・維持が困難な時期ではありますが、この空間の存在はデームス先生の魂の宝箱として多くの方に感じていただきたいと思います。
もちろん池田明子先生の努力による「サローネ・クリストフォリ」が始まり（１９９１年６月３０日 献堂式）でありますが、皆様方の努力で「サローネ・フォンタナ」として今日までデームス音楽の拠点のひとつでいることを感謝しております。
デームス先生とその音楽は私達の心の中に生き続けています。
